Amniotic sac

The amniotic sac, which some people refer to as “the bag of waters”, is the sac of membranes in your womb in which your baby grows.

The amniotic sac is made up of two thin, but strong, transparent membranes: the amnion and the chorion. The amnion is the inner membrane which contains your baby and the amniotic fluid. The chorion is the outer membrane which contains the amnion and part of the placenta.

During your pregnancy the amniotic sac carries out several important functions including:

  • protecting your baby from bumps and bruises

  • providing your baby with space to move and grow so she can develop her musculoskeletal system

  • protecting your baby from infection

When your amniotic sac breaks, you refer to it as your water breaking.
