Embryo

Between week 3 and week 10 your baby is in the embryonic stage of his development, which means the scientific term for your baby at this time is an embryo.

The development of the embryo is known as embryogenesis. The zygote which forms after fertilisation undergoes mitosis for about 5 to 7 days until it has enough cells to classify as an embryo.

All embryos, human and non-human, are organisms during the earliest stages of their development. They are classified as embryos, because they do not yet resemble the organism they will be after birth. For this reason during the first 10 weeks of your baby’s development you will often find that we describe your baby as more frog-like than human. Once, the embryo becomes recognisable as a human being in week 10 it becomes a fetus!
