Risk factors for gestational diabetes
There are several risk factors for gestational diabetes, which you can see right here. However, you must remember that even if none of these risk factors describe you or your pregnancy you should still be tested for gestational diabetes as it can affect any pregnancy. Likewise, having one or more of these risk factors does not mean you will definitely suffer from the condition, so don’t worry if you do, just make sure you get tested.
Risk factors for gestational diabetes include:
- A history of gestational diabetes or prediabetes
- A family history of type 2 diabetes
- If you are over 35
- If you are medically overweight or obese
- A previous pregnancy in which you delivered a heavier than average baby
- Poor obstetric history
- Smoking
- PCOS
In 40-60% of all gestational diabetes cases no symptoms are apparent, so don’t forget to aak your doctor about having a blood glucose test.
