15 weeks pregnant: your baby

week 15

Your baby at 15 weeks of pregnancy

During the fifteenth week of pregnancy your baby is about the size of an orange, which by the way is a good source of vitamin C for you and your baby. Your baby weighs about 1 ¾ ounces or 50 grams this week, we told you he would start growing quickly.

Right now your baby’s skin is still very thin, thin enough that you can see blood vessels through it. Also your baby’s bones are now hard enough to be visible on an X-ray and he has begun to wiggle his toes and fingers and to make breathing movements.

Right now is a good time to consider scheduling an alpha-fetoprotein (AFP) test. AFP is a protein secreted by your baby’s liver and too much or too little of it can indicate a fetal problem. It is best to take this test sometime between week 16 and week 18, so talk to your physician about whether you need one, because some mothers are not at risk and won’t need to worry.

What’s happening to your body this week?
