19 weeks pregnant: your baby

week 19

Your baby at 19 weeks of pregnancy

In the nineteenth week of pregnancy your baby weighs approximately 7 ounces or 200 grams and is about 6 inches or 15 cm long, that’s the length of a small subway sandwich!

This week your baby’s hearing has improved. He can hear many of your bodily functions, including your heartbeat, and is more aware of low-pitched sounds than high-pitched ones outside of the womb.

Your baby is currently covered in vernix caseosa, a greasy white substance which protects him from the surrounding amniotic fluid and keeps him from looking wrinkly at birth, much like what you look like after spending too long in the bath.

It is now possible to have an ultrasound to test for hydrocephalus, the enlargement of your baby’s head due to the build up fluid in his brain. Hydrocephalus is treatable before birth so talk to your physician to get more information.

Did you know…your baby hears by feeling vibrations in his skull which are then transmitted to his inner ear?

What’s happening to your body this week?
