This is the sixth week of the first trimester of your pregnancy. This week you should be having your first prenatal visit! This is when your doctor will run through questions about your physical and medical history, you will also have some tests to check that you are all healthy to have your baby.

  • Urine samples – This will test your blood sugar levels, which will indicate whether you have any infections or are suffering from diabetes. You will normally have to give a urine sample at the beginning of each appointment.
  • Blood tests – You will have a blood test to check your blood type and Rh factor. The sample will indicate whether you are suffering from anemia, HIV, sexually transmitted diseases or rubella.
  • The physical examination – Your midwife will measure your blood pressure and weigh you. During this first appointment you will also have your breasts felt, just to make sure everything is safe and feels normal.
  • Chat – This is where you get to know your midwife, if you have any problems don’t worry you can find another one! Take this opportunity to ask any questions you may have and make sure you take a pen and paper with you so you can write down the answers.
