When to worry about swollen ankles

Questions about swollen ankles

When should I worry about my swollen ankles?

Have you noticed that you have swollen ankles? If so, you don’t have anything to worry about, because swollen ankles are a perfectly normal and harmless, though uncomfortable pregnancy symptom that most pregnant women experience in their third trimester of pregnancy.

You may also experience swelling in your hands, but you only need to worry if that swelling is sudden and excessive and makes it hard for you to complete everyday tasks. If this occurs we recommend contacting your doctor or midwife immediately as it may be a sign of pre-eclampsia.

Moreover, if you notice any swelling or puffiness in your face, especially around your eyes, you should contact your doctor immediately as this swelling is not normal and could also be a sign of pre-eclampsia.

Finally,  if one leg swells up suddenly and is accompanied by tenderness in your calf and thigh, you should call your doctor as it may be a blood clot.
Remember these complications are not a part of every pregnancy so don’t worry too much about them. All you need to do is to keep an eye out so that in the event you do experience pre-eclampsia or a blood clot you can take all the necessary steps to protect the health of you and your baby.
