When October rolls around we all get caught up in the excitement of Halloween and often forget October is an important month for another reason, it’s National Breast Cancer Awareness Month.
As women and even more so as mothers, breast cancer is a constant threat in our lives. It’s a scary reality, but in October we have an opportunity to not only recognise those affected by it, but to also raise awareness about early detection and to raise funds for treatment that could one day save the life of a loved one.
Throughout October, there are events held all across the world by the biggest breast cancer organisations currently in existence. These events range from the well-known Race for the Cure activities to discussion forums and informative lectures. The main objectives of National Breast Cancer Awareness Month are:
- To spread awareness about breast cancer and promote the importance of early detection and possible prevention.
- To raise funds for breast cancer research in the fields of its cause, prevention, diagnosis, treatment and cure.
- To support those affected by breast cancer, including those families who have lost a loved one to breast cancer.
Do you have any plans for October to help raise awareness for breast cancer? Raising awareness can be as simple as declaring that you’ve gone pink for October on your social networking feeds, visiting pinkforoctober.org to get free Facebook and Twitter backgrounds or wearing a pink top. Or you can get really involved and participate in a local breast cancer awareness event or even organise your own.
It’s October, let’s go pink together!
