Working women opting for the choice to be single mothers

As women take on men in the financial and reputational stakes in the world of work, there is an emerging revolution in working women choosing to become single mothers. Whether it be by In Vitro Fertilization (IVF), artificial insemination, assisted reproductive techniques or others including ovodonation and the donation of oocytes. It’s all a really interesting world now women can opt to become mothers on their own. They can even take a holiday whilst becoming pregnant, for example, in a fertility clinic in Spain. What better way to bring in your next ‘mini-mes’?

Although women need the physical sperm of a man to have their babies, artificial insemination with donor semen is a possibility, so they can now put in their requirements accordingly and tailor make their child to their specifications. It all sounds a bit futuristic, but today’s new woman is on the case, with the booming trend for single parenthood. The taboos of going it alone are long gone when as many as two of three marriages fail, and women are increasingly claiming the maternal ground solely for themselves.

An interesting report published just under a decade ago ‘Custodial Mothers and Fathers and Their Child Support’ released by the U.S. Census Bureau, stated there were approximately 13.7 million single parents in the USA today, responsible for the upbringing of 22 million children. That’s a lot of number crunching, but basically means about a quarter of children under 21 in the USA are the children of single parents. In the census, nearly all of custodial single parents were women (82%), nearly half were divorced or separated (44%), and three quarters (76%) were employed. More interestingly they increasingly do not seem to live in poverty or rely on state assistance and a staggering 37% are over 40 years of age.

A lot of U.S women are keen on choosing USA Cities for Single Moms and to choose a country like Spain is deemed the perfect environment by many a woman opting to jump in with the single mother crowd. Barcelona is one classic city which is a great relaxing place to conceive your child and Barcelona IVF is a typical example of somewhere U.S. women often choose. With incentives like ‘If you don’t get pregnant, we’ll refund your money’ what is there to lose? Spanish fertility clinics are on the rise, too, with US and UK donor waiting lists on the rise. Fertility tourism really is the new fad.

A fertility clinic in Spain offers many pluses. Women in Spain are paid €900 for their eggs, so there is no shortage of them. It also has many well established and successful clinics. Waiting times can be as short as five weeks compared to 18 months to two years for donor eggs abroad. There is also a 65% success rate so over average and much higher than the 40% – 45% offered in the UK. Costs for egg donation (own egg) are priced at   €4693/  £3273  / $5393 versus the cost for egg donation (exclusive donor egg) at  €7000  / £5553  / $8050. In the UK alone this is approximately half of what you’d pay, and in the USA you might pay up to $26,000 for one round of IVF. We can truly see why fertility tourism is on the rise.
