4 weeks pregnant: your baby

week 4

Your baby before he splits into the embryo and placenta

During the fourth week of pregnancy your baby is still very tiny, comparable to a poppy seed in fact, and unfortunately you can’t yet see her on an ultrasound, but there’s not long to wait for that. Right now your baby is probably still burrowing herself into your lining, so you may experience some bleeding, but don’t worry this is 100% normal.

Your embryo is now splitting into two parts: the placenta and your baby! Thanks to the placenta you and your baby are now attached, which means you are her main source of oxygen and nutrients. So it’s important to maintain a healthy lifestyle from now on.

At this minute, three very important cell layers are forming: the endoderm, the mesoderm and the ectoderm. The endoderm, or inner layer, will develop into your baby’s digestive system, liver and thyroid. The mesoderm, or middle layer, will become your baby’s circulatory system, bones, kidneys and muscles. And finally the ectoderm, or outer layer, will form your baby’s hair, skin, eyes and nervous system. Are you already picturing what she will look like in 36 weeks time?

What’s happening to your body this week?
