Constipation
Constipation can be quite an embarrassing pregnancy symptom to talk about, but it affects around 50% of all pregnant women so there really is no need to be embarrassed.
Constipation is probably best described as difficult and infrequent bowel movements which are accompanied by some mild abdominal discomfort and pain. However, if your constipation is accompanied by severe abdominal pain or rectal bleeding you should contact your doctor immediately.
Constipation can be the result of several factors including:
- Worry and anxiety
- Stress
- Dehydration
- A relaxed digestive tract thanks to the higher levels of progesterone in your body.
- Your expanding uterus
- Any iron supplements you may be taking
Everyone wants to avoid constipation, because it is uncomfortable and can cause or aggravate hemorrhoids. Fortunately, there are several steps you can take to avoid and relieve constipation during your pregnancy.
