One in every 100 women in the U.K. experiences more than three miscarriagesin their lifetime, which causes many women to question their ability to have children and to fear the worst. However, a recent study conducted by doctors at the University of Southampton in the UK and Utrecht in the Netherlands has revealed that there may actually be no need to worry.
These doctors believed that there was a possibility that “super-fertility” could actually be the cause of multiple miscarriages. “Super-fertility” basically means that a woman’s womb is so hospitable that it allows many eggs, even low-quality ones, to implant in her uterine wall. For this reason, they decided to study 12 women: 6 of whom were considered to have normal fertility levels and 6 of whom had already suffered multiple miscarriages.
The test revealed that when low-quality and high-quality fertilised eggs were placed in the womb of a normally fertile woman her uterus favoured implantation of the high-quality eggs. However, when placed in the womb of a “super-fertile” woman her uterus did not distinguish between the high and low-quality eggs and favoured implantation for both types of eggs.
As a result, the doctors who performed this study have concluded that multiple miscarriages can, in fact, be attributed to a woman’s “super-fertility” and thus she should eventually have a successful pregnancy. Their next goal is to create a test which will reveal if a woman who has experienced several miscarriages is “super-fertile” and just needs to keep trying or if she needs to seek fertility treatment.
