Your partner’s sperm
Prior to the procedure you will be advised not to masturbate or have sex. This is so that when you produce your sperm sample it can be a full amount therefore, helping the quality. Once your man has masturabted into a sample cup, the sperm sample will then be washed and filtered in order to get rid of the dead sperm and toxins. The sperm will be specific and healthy sperm ready to be inserted. A speculum will then be used in order to keep the walls of your vagina open. Once you are correctly positioned, a catheter will then be guided through your vagina into your womb with the sperm sample. Overall, the procedure should only take around 10 minutes.

If you already know that your male partner is not able to produce any healthy sperm then a frozen sperm donation could be for you!

Your donar’s sperm
The procedure is the same however, frozen sperm will be used. It will be defrosted, washed then filtered. All donor sperm is closely checked for any infections such as HIV or genetic and hereditary conditions such as anemia, this is to ensure that it does not affect the health of the child.

What are the risks?

The only risks is the possibility of multiple births, such as twins or triplets. In IUI cycles combined with follicle-stimulating hormone, a fertility hormone that enhances  the egg quantity produced, multiple pregnancy rates range from 10 – 40%.
